HB 50, a bill prohibiting mandatory overtime for nurses in Alaska passes legislature on 4/18/10. Alaska now proudly joins 15 other States in taking steps to protect patient safety through law. Passage of this bill has been in the works for the past six years. This Bill does not abolish overtime unless consecutive work hours supersede 14 hours of a regular shift, then a mandatory ten hour rest period is required. 04-13-2011 Senate Journal 0845 SB 5 SENATE BILL NO. 5 "An Act relating to eligibility requirements for medical assistance for certain children and pregnant women; and providing for an effective date" was read the third time and fails in Senate. According to The Alaska Nurse official publication of AaNA, Vol. 61, No. 2, p. 9, following Parnell's veto last year of the bill to raise the Denali Kid Care (DKC) income eligibility for children and pregnant women from 175% to 200% of the federal poverty line, Senator Davis reintroduced SB 5 this session, which was moved through the Senate quickly and failed again by a vote of 10 to 10. This bill is back in Senate Rules. It is also stated that Governor Parell continues to oppose this measure because the measure may increase the number of abortions funded under DKC. |
